For many obese people, a doctor’s care just doesn’t cut it. A recent study at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, shows that health education is a better way to fight obesity. The study followed about 500 obese people for six years. Half the participants continued regular visits with their doctors. The other participants received about 30 half-hour sessions with a
health educator over two years. The educators helped patients develop individual diet and exercise plans.
Among the men who received health education, fewer developed metabolic syndrome (a group of symptoms that raise one’s risk of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes). Women who received health education lost weight during the first year, but did not have a lower rate of metabolic syndrome at the end of the study. Researchers speculated that women and men may need different amounts and types of health education.
This supports our position that diet and lifestyle changes, in conjunction with a coaching program, is more effective at healing diabetes than conventional medical care.

When diabetes progresses to the point where physical activity is difficult, cocoa may help turn things around. People with diabetes often have damaged mitochondria in their muscles. Mitochondria are cellular structures that produce most of the cells’ energy. People feel fatigued and short of breath when their muscle mitochondria don’t work well.
A small clinical trial in San Diego, California, has found that epicatechin, a compound in dark chocolate, can help restore
such damaged mitochondria. These results have led to a larger trial to study whether patients’ exercise capacity improves when they’re treated with epicatechin-rich cocoa. In the meantime, add organic, unsweetened cocoa to smoothies, coffee, steel-cut oats, and plain Greek yogurt!

Science has good news for java junkies. Researchers followed about 42,000 German adults for nine years, monitoring coffee consumption and development of several chronic illnesses. The study found that people who drank more than 4 cups of coffee per day were 23 percent less likely than nondrinkers to develop Type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that coffee drinkers and nondrinkers had a similar risk of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart attack, and cancer. So go ahead and enjoy that cuppa joe!

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a chemical found in many plastics. It also lines most cans. A new study shows that BPA exposure causes metabolic changes that can lead to Type 2 diabetes. When a person consumes BPA, it can signal the pancreas to release double the amount of insulin cells need to turn food into energy. (Even a very small amount of BPA—one-quarter of one-billionth of a gram—can trigger this reaction.)
When too much insulin circulates, cells can become resistant, or “immune,” to it. The body stores the food as fat instead of breaking it down for energy. This, in turn, leads to weight gain—and often, to Type 2 diabetes.
Instead of using plastic containers and bottles, choose glass. You can also look for BPA-free plastic when glass is not available or practical. When buying canned food, make sure to choose BPA-free cans.

Scientists at the UK’s University of Leicester quizzed 505 men and women on their sitting habits and tested their blood for chemicals linked with diabetes. The study found that women who sat seven hours per day had higher levels of insulin.
High insulin suggests the body is growing resistant to insulin and diabetes is developing. These women also had higher levels of several chemicals that indicate inflammation in the body. The researchers did not find similar results in the men they studied.

A recent review of research shows that drinking three cups of black tea per day can lower a person’s risk of both Type 2 diabetes and heart attack. A cup of black tea contains high levels of flavonoids, which are a potent antioxidant. Antioxidants protect the body’s cells against day-to-day damage.
The review found that it took three or more daily cups of tea to protect against heart disease. It took only two or more cups per day to protect against diabetes. In a separate study, researchers in Sweden found that a compound in green tea helped diabetic mice. The compound, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), is another kind of antioxidant. Diabetic mice that consumed EGCG produced more insulin and had better blood sugar levels than mice that ate none.

British Doctors Cure Type 2 Diabetes
The international press was abuzz a few weeks ago with news that UK researchers found a cure for Type 2 diabetes.
Blood sugar levels were completely normal in 7 of the 11 the diabetics in the study after just one week. By the end of the 8-week trial, they regained the ability to manufacture insulin at normal levels.
The British cure was not achieved by a new wonder drug – but rather with a strict, 600-calorie-per-day diet.
“To have people free of diabetes after years with the condition is remarkable,” said Dr. Roy Taylor, commenting on the impressive results.
Speaking of the many diabetes drugs he used to take, 67-year-old Gordon Parmley, one of the study participants said: “Still today, 18 months on, I don’t take them. It’s astonishing really, that a diet — hard as it was — could change my health so drastically.”
Even Dr. Roy Palmer, the professor behind the 600-calorie diet, admits the regimen is so torturously difficult that only 5% of people who try it would stick with it — even though the reward is a drug-free and diabetes-free life.
A 600-calorie diet can feel brutal (most adults consume about 2,000 or more calories per day). This isn’t a diet most people will put up with for very long.
But curing Type 2 needn’t be this extreme. Continued…
